We have VMs in various sizes, because problems come in various sizes.
But the hardware the VMs run on has a grain size. Usually you want the grains to be as large as possible, but the largest computers we can buy are disproportionately expensive, so it is something large reasonably prices, often the 2nd or 3rd largest thing we can build.
Machines also need to be balanced. Often we see 1 core, 4 GB of memory and remote storage appropriately sized.
