In Debt, Graeber explains how warlords would demand tribute from people they'd subjugated, in the form of metal disks with portraits of the warlords face on them. Then they'd issue disks like that to their soldiers. Who could exchange them with the peasants, for the goods and services needed to maintain standing armies, and conquer yet more territory to tax.
