Infogrames paid $100M for Atari and did nothing except re-name themselves Atari.
The big misstep was this: Infogrames primarily made PC games. However, most people associated Atari with consoles and completely forgot about Atari’s PC legacy.
What Infogrames should have done was remind people about the Atari 8-bit computer family as well as the later ST.
They should have re-released the Atari 400 as a joystick, and made it hackable.
They should have done a DVD-ROM of the ST’s greatest hits.
This would have reminded all those PC gamers that Atari was building on their past PC legacy. People would then connect Alone in the Dark and The Witcher with Star Raiders and M.U.L.E.
That’s how a brand builds value.
