Silver birch is a woodland pioneer - they are able to establish a decent woodland canopy within a couple of decades, but they often don't live much longer than 120 years.
This ancient woodland has matured - it's now dominated by hornbeam and oak trees. The pioneer species such as silver birch have done their job, and have fallen to create a criss-cross of deadwood across the brook.
