In the late 70s l worked in a textile factory, men l worked alongside earned double for the exact tasks. If a woman left her husband she could lose everything that was law. Women who worked in the public sector had to leave their jobs when they got married. My grandmother would never have considered leaving her violent husband she would have been shamed and on the street, and her children removed. It was a different kind of crazy then but somehow justified. I'm 66 this isn't that long ago.
