I never thought of myself as a person who relies on alt text cause, you know, I can see. But, being in environments were most people use alt text, I have quickly come to rely on it. So much that I'm disappointed when there isn't any (or worse, the alt text just says "alt text" ). I'm often confused about a picture and alt text has helped me out so many times. (I'm still confused about pics with good alt text sometimes, but that's a me problem :P )
