As a semi-ex-WiFi hacker, one of the things I think the “you don’t need a VPN, public WiFi is fine” take misses - is that this is only partly true because the number of criminal hackers is lower than the number of public WiFi networks & you can’t scale an opportunistic attack over disparate layer 2 networks.
