Corporate IoT is likely only going to last about 3 years. They don't have an incentive to build things that last longer than that. That's capitalism. It's more profitable to sell a customer a new unit every few years.
Meanwhile, the open source community is incentivized by making cool things that put users in control. They're not in it for the profit motive. They want to have nice things and give others the opportunity to also have nice things. And part of our definition of "nice" means it respects people's privacy, lasts a long time, is repairable, and is upgradable.
We still have to follow the laws of economics to be sustsinable, but it's a night and day difference in terms of priorities.
