As a large, queer, gentleman of color, I feel tremendous amounts of stress at the prospect of experiencing micro inequities.
This is not from paranoia but years of experience firsthand.
In particular around on-demand medical professionals (ER, urgent care, etc).
I’m preparing for a telemedicine appt by being EXTRA careful shaving, cleaning up my office area so that it looks professional with fake medical and dosing notes to let the doctor know I’m not some fat and lazy slob looking for what they may perceive as a bandage solution—
… but a burdened caretaker with a certain level of experience and domain specific knowledge looking for help to lighten their own personal load.
And now to rehearse a dialogue tree so they can feel some level of empathy as they’ve been taught in medical school and pretty much most of their privileged lives to turn off sympathy towards people like me.
It’s like trying to score painkillers except with legitimate medicine I need 🙃
