I'm sorry that I don't have references to offer, but I want to suggest that one of the hardest things for "intro" students to learn in science, and something that needs to be made explicit, is that We Just Make Shit Up. (And Then Of Course Test It) Kids come in having mostly just learned *things*, and learning to think involves making up stories, and maybe they need to be told that out loud?
