My coworker explained why it's that way, he called it fine read fat write. Basically they write 3 lines now,and read 1 line. Makes your first write on a clean drive faster (from what I understand of what he was explaining) but when it has to change 1 line, it's gotta do 3. Basically large drives are for single archive, not daily backup.
