I arrived to the same conclusion...
He seemed to have passed his life fighting pain and trying to retain sanity (as Rusty's quote does gives a glimpse about...)
The only thing I managed to find was that he was part of movements with artists that all joined the Communist party while he refused to join which generated conflicts and "vitriolic written exchanges" ?
This seems to have created enough beef to even call him fascist ? 🤔
