I don't like "federating manually" and I don't think it will catch on. It's feasible for the admins of the 10 default relays you're subscribed to to all decide to block you and then you're invisible to 99% of people. It's more centralised than the fediverse even in its current state for that reason alone. When a couple of friendly fediniggas came over to shitpost in good humour they already started talking about having to boot people from relays so I don't think it's an unthinkable scenario.
Also every frontend I've tried is dogshit but that could be rectified easily enough.
