Fundamentalism works well if you want to build a megachurch with a lot of followers, but the walls will be high and thick, and the megachurch isn’t going to get along with others well.
If one wants to live in a society and have an effective society that is run well that involves the right to hold and practice according to different points of view (like what you said, “not believing it’s literally true”), fundamentalism is a really bad idea because, once again, fundamentalists don’t get along with other people well.
