Christmas Charity Event
Hi everyone, this year we’ll again be doing a Christmas/ or “festive” for anyone of another religion) charity event, this year to provide a party, school fete style, for some kids in one of the poorest area of Asunción - the area on the riverbank between the Palace and Lambare, which gets flooded every year and makes thousands of people homeless each time.
There’s a volunteer charity which runs a school down there with 150 kids of all ages. Unlike last year where we arranged presents for kids in a hospital, the charity has requested not to bring different gifts for different kids (to prevent jealousy/unfairness etc), but instead to spend some time with the kids, and bring lots of food to share (ideally as much as you can carry), pot-luck style, and help them have a fun day which they usually don’t get the opportunity to have.
The kids will be split into two groups, younger and older, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and all of them will have the chance to meet some foreigners (us), under full supervision, in the school and its playground, with a bit of music, some playing football, some just hanging out and listing to us talk about our countries, our jobs, and answering any questions they have. For many, it will be the first time they’ve interacted with people from around the world, and have probably never even heard of some of the jobs we do. Hopefully we can plant some seeds and open some minds to new possibilities 🙌
There is no cost, other than your time, and as much food as you are able to bring to share - if you can make something from your home country that would be great, but even something bought from the supermarket will be an improvement on what these kids normally eat.
Donations will of course be accepted by the charity directly, and there is also a “shop” where you can buy things made by some of the kids and their families - they make art from items sourced from the rubbish dump nearby (these kids live in the area where all our trash ends up dumped next to their “houses”, which flood every time the river bursts its banks.
Capacity is limited due to space, but we hope to have groups of people turn up at different times throughout the day, bringing food, meeting the kids, and seeing what their life is like, just a few kilometres from all our fancy modern apartments.
This is being organised between this Asunción Digital Nomads community and the Bitcoin Paraguay community (and of course the charity which works to help these kids every day of the year), if you want to meet one of the charity organisers, hear their story, check them out, etc, there will be a presentation at the monthly Bitcoin Paraguay community meetup at Palo Santo this evening from 7pm onwards, so come join (the monthly meet-ups are aimed at beginners to Bitcoin, as well as long-term bitcoiners - everyone is always welcome).
More details about the charity event will be provided in here later, the planned date for the fete/party is Weds 18th December.
Last year we had a huge turnout with a much smaller community, so please join us in doing something nice for some of the least fortunate of our neighbours in Asunción 🙌
More to follow over the next few days, and hope to see lots of you there tonight ❤️
