So how did we go from wolves killing deer to herding sheep?
Like with any trait we have bred and trained in dogs, it all originated from a behavior that we still see in wolves. Sure, wolves don't really herd. However, they do hunt in a manner that involves trailing and driving prey in a wanted direction.
Basically all traits dogs have can be tracked back to an innate behavior that's been modified. It's very interesting.
