Many of the ills of government-managed economies skate by under the radar due to purposefully obscurantist state media, widespread economic fallacies, and the fact that it is easier to "see" the "good effects" that the con artist's misdirection wants you to see (than it is to notice the millions of tiny thefts and redistributions victimizing everyone but the well-connected).
It's no coincidence (nor accident) that the proliferation of the Internet, de-centering of mainstream media, rise of censorship-free protocols and the emergence of the shining, orange example of an actual free market has had the effect of dismantling the veils of economic ignorance previously pulled over the masses' eyes.
Everyone now has the ability to: see what's going on, recognize the aggregate negative effects, talk about it together and re-broadcast these observations, AND take action to move to a truly free system which overcomes all these harms. And you see it happening.
Not since Henry Hazlitt wrote his _Economics in One Lesson_ has this been feasible and the tone of his writing doesn't convey that he expected it to ever happen, sadly.
...I guess he didn't anticipate the #cypherpunks.
