simple „most liked“ wouldn’t work, it could just be spam likes, and deciding what’s spam and what’s not shouldn’t be done universally imo.
the best tradeoff I think might be something like a home feed with internal relevancy point rating for notes:
+10pts for each followed liking the note
+50pts for each followed reposting it
+100pts if followed person posted it
+1pt for each followed by following like
-5% of pts per each hour passed
-80% of pts once you’ve already seen the post
etc.
then sort timeline by points.
actually that feed is exactly what I’m missing in nostr/damus, follows only is missing a lot of cool stuff and new accounts while still having a lot of irrelevant content, and global is just unfiltered chaos. could easily be customisable in client too. but not sure how stupid and/or unfeasible that actually is tbh.
