Some years ago, I was at a secondhand book sale, where I saw a copy of Guards, Guards by Terry Pratchett. I picked it up out of sheer fondness to read a few pages before popping it back on the table.
A teen standing next to me swooped in to grab it, simultaneously muttering, “Idiot” with full adolescent disdain — presumably at me for being so foolish as to choose to pass on a Terry Pratchett book.
I wanted to say, “Mate, I have a signed copy of this book at home! I’ve met the man, several times, all the way back when we used to called him pTerry! I heard him tell the story of how he signed so many books in a row that his hand cramped up and a service station clerk made him sign for a credit card payment three times before he could force his cramping hand to match his usual signature! Show some respect to an elder lady of the fandom!”
But I merely admired the chutzpah of insulting a person who had just given him a great gift, and moved on 😂
