Port workers’ next demand: Stop robots from taking our jobs
==========

Harold Daggett, president of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), leads 47,000 dockworkers in a campaign against automation after a recent three-day port strike that secured a 62% wage increase over six years. The ILA's contract with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) was extended through January 15, 2025, to address automation concerns. Daggett demands 'absolute airtight language' to prevent automation during the contract period. U.S. ports lag behind Europe and Asia in technology use, with some ports already employing semi-automated systems. Despite technological advancements, U.S. unemployment rates have remained lower than in previous decades. Daggett's anti-automation stance has garnered support from Senator Bernie Sanders. Analysts warn that the ILA may only delay inevitable automation, as economic incentives favor technological progress. The first partially automated terminal opened in 1993 in Rotterdam, with 53 automated terminals globally, accounting for 4% of capacity. Workers express fears of job loss due to increasing automation, emphasizing the need for human labor in port operations.
