You would be expecting to get generic results which spoke of shoes for running, choices of shoes, positive and negative; some generic from blogs and forums alongside pages from several brands.

If Google was adding the brands to search for "Adidas running shoes", "Nike running shoes", "Decathlon running shoes", etc... and then collating the results then you would not be getting a result based on the term, but on the approximation of their commercial interests.

In this case what they say they do is if you search for "Adidas running shoes", they search for "running shoes" first and within that result set give more prominence to the ones also related to "Adidas".

The first option would be defining the search by the commercial interests, the second is is (theoretically), defining the search by theme and then relating the brand to what the user searched for.

This does not mean there aren't other bullshits at work in google search though.
