I don't think that is true. while copying others without understanding the "why" is a true force of nature, developers are still lazy, and if they could let you login with zero fraction they would.
But it isn't feasible, so even when someone wants to avoid the email/sms thing, they often find and alternative like invite codes or debit card verification without immediate payment.
Take your own advice, and admit that there is a problem and try to find an alternative, because shaming these companies won't work, because they can't afford to implement nothing, unless they aren't offering any persistence of data, which is what Nostr relays opted for and it doesn't work for 99% of businesses.
