I am so absolutely unhinged about how nobody can game for fun anymore. I spent like 90% of my hours in CS:S playing stuff like gungame, scoutsknivez, and zombie escape. I wasn't playing to get better and participate in "e-sports".

There wasn't even "e-sports", there were tournaments. Everyone knew those were what mattered, because there was no way to guarantee that people weren't cheating other than to plop them in a room on a computer that wasn't theirs. That reality hasn't changed but all the snake oil software salesmen have convinced gamers otherwise.
