A #Linux tip if you're new...
Putting /home on a separate drive, or at least a separate partition from / provides you the ability to reinstall your distro without losing anything. Simply make the same users and passwords during reinstall that you had before, and set that partition to keep/Don't format, and a mount point of /home.
As you reinstall your applications you'll find all your settings will still be there (minus a few outliers, I'm sure).
