I read The Mysteries of Udolpho to see what the young ladies of Austen's time were reading.
It is truly terrifying, and although melodramatic to us, was believable of the time it was written and the lack of communication and lonely remote locations in those days. It was also very entertaining from the safety of the present and the heroine was definitely strong and resolute.😉
