In the wild, many things (mostly plants but sometimes animals) will increase their genome size via genome duplication - such as these decaploid berries (10 copies of genome) which are wild accessions found in Chile. Genome duplication assists with stresses, a cold tolerant gene becomes a heat shock gene on another copy.
