The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ended up costing the US trillions. And we have to deal with airport security, AML/KYC, etc.

I don't have the answer. Personally I'm happy the Berlin wall and Soviet Union fell when I was very young, rather than more recently. But I didn't pay most of the bill.
