Euphorbia pulcherrim is known as poinsettia to those of European origin but cuētlaxōchitl in the Americas. This older name has roots in the Aztec language Nahuatl, meaning "flower that withers, mortal flower". Originally a sacred plant used in ceremonies to celebrate the birth of Huitzilopochtli during the winter solstice, they were also used for medicinal and healing purposes, and dyeing fabrics.
