Every new solution creates new problems, doesn't it?

Major supermarkets have cut staff costs by using customer self-checkout technology. But customers learned how to game the self-checkout technology and started cheating.

So now supermarkets are having to add security guards to deal with violent thieves. (Security guards must cost more per hour than a check out person.)

These stories about customer theft may be a planned campaign intended to "soften up the market" - to get us to accept the eventual roll out of facial recognition and more advanced anti-theft technologies.

The end game may be that we end up with a de facto "social credit" culture. Known thieves are recognised by CCTV facial recognition and blocked from entering stores.

But thieves will then move to the smaller vendors, who won't be able to afford the anti-theft technology. Increasing the likelihood of small shops going out of business. Which increases market share for the major supermarkets. Coles and Woolies won't mind less competition.

The majors are spinning this as "Thieves are not stealing food to eat. They're stealing high value items to resell so they can buy drugs".
