Although telescopes are designed to reflect and refract light, astronomers want to minimize stray light sneaking into their instruments. They spray devices and components with black paint to cut down on that stray light, but the darkest paints are fragile and can't withstand the harshest conditions. Researchers have developed an atomic layer deposition method, which adheres paint in extremely thin layers, absorbing 99.3% of light while being durable to wear and tear.
