As an unemployed person, a lot of people have been asking me what I'm "doing with myself" these days and when I say that I've been spending a lot of time on Fedi, I always get some combination of incredulity or side-eye, the implication being that it's somehow not productive or a good use of time. "That's it? That's all?"
No, Chad, that's not "all". I'm just doing things at my own speed these days and not at the behest of some corpo goon cracking a whip over my head. The DIY mindset here and the fact that I actually interact with legendary heroes and exciting new heroes has been reminding me of what I have lost and what I want to get back.
Spending time on fedi is valuable to me because I'm:
Rediscovering who I am, at my speed, without the crutch of "what I do"
Reigniting my own passions by watching others be passionate about stuff
Slowly recovering from dev/tech burn out by hearing interesting ideas on the 'verse
Gaining a wider global perspective
Being able to participate in discussions in Europe (like on my home instance) in near real time rather than a 12 or 18 hour delay
Rethinking personal philosophies due to exposure to people groups and subjects that I would likely never be exposed to in daily life
Discovering a more diverse humanity, warts and all
I'd say I've been doing quite a lot.
