Some long while ago I configured Gmail to "Ask before displaying external images". I kinda forgot about it. I certainly haven't missed any important information because of this and have saved myself a whole lot of surveillance.

I got a plain-text-looking email with the "Display images" option. I thought huh? Looked at the source, and sure enough it's actually an HTML email with a tracker image to see if you opened it.

Remote images should probably be turned off by default.
