Pacman is a way more powerful program than apt, but, like... It's a complete dumpsterfire from a usability standpoint. I'm convinced they make it obtuse on purpose. I use a pacman wrapper/AUR helper called yay so I'm not working with pacman directly all that much, and if I am it's usually while I'm copying commands from the Arch Wiki. The AUR is the main reason I use Arch, since I hate building from source so much. The pkgbuild files on Arch are just so convenient for my lazy ass.
I've never broken my system by updating Arch, but I have had small things break periodically. The Arch package maintainers like to fiddle with dependencies sometimes so you'll update a package and have some part of it just stop working until you realize they made a dependency optional or spun it out into its own package. It's rare but extremely annoying.
