Read your history, kids. Even kings with absolute power sometimes had to change their decisions in response to public opinion.

Even under totalitarianism, the people have power. Democracy (when it works) merely provides a more direct path for the will of the people but the power of the people is always there. Every government exists with the consent of the governed, and the people can take that authority away.

Do not give in to despair.
