#Japan is releasing water from #Fukushima into the ocean after treatment. There are popular protests and formal objections from #China and #SouthKorea.
#Nuclear waste is no joke, and there is no perfect solution. But to the best of my understanding, this is a safe and possibly the best solution. In fact, there is an argument for releasing the water faster than Japan is planning. Keeping ever growing amounts of radioactive water for decades is not a good idea. This is considered leaving the problem for future generations, something the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) advises against.
So although "nuclear power plants worldwide have routinely discharged water containing tritium for over 60 years without harm to people or the environment, most at higher levels than planned for Fukushima," popular opinion says otherwise, with China banning Japanese seafood.
