I think you're misunderstanding the nature of the controversy.
The issue is that transgenderism and its associated treatments were sold to the public as a medical condition that required surgeries and drugs. We're now learning that this is mostly unsubstantiated quackery, with an extremely poor evidence base.
European countries, including the UK, Norway, Sweden and your native Finland, have been heavily rolling back their pediatric gender programs.
The main reason it persists in the US is certainly partially because of goofy partisan fights, but really more because it's a massive cash cow to the pharmaceutical industry. This is basically opoiod epidemic 2.0.
Though people are slowly waking up. Some of them are batshit fundies, sure, but if that was all there was they would've been laughed out of the room, like the fundies in the 90s saying Harry Potter promotes devil worship. Really the bulk of the completely justified backlash against this nonsense is coming from fairly centrist, concerned parents.
They don't care R vs D, they'll vote for anyone who promises to keep people from fucking with their kids.
