One more thought. Another tried-and-true approach of healthy forums is moderation. Unnecessarily inflammatory posts are simply removed, etc. Traces of outrage flare-ups are cleaned up and forgotten.
I know we all hate the idea of centralized moderation (though it works well on subject-matter platforms). How about decentralized moderation though? How about rating posts as “more / less helpful?” with the rating affecting how much they’re shown?
This seems to work well for reddit. When you see an inflammatory post that’s severely downvoted, you don’t feel as outraged as if the post had no votes either way. Much of the outrage is actually from the perception that a lot of people have the same views as the inflammatory guy, which triggers a self-protection response which is unnecessary if we feel supported by the 90% of other participants.
