I really love that "privacy-preserving" as a descriptor has become so generic as to be meaningless.
A few real interpretations I've seen this last week:
- "we don't keep the data we log - promise"
- "we use oblivious http - don't ask about who operates the indirection node - ok it's us but it's legally separate..promise"
- "yes, we log and process individual records, but only to check correctness - then we throw that data away - promise"
To be clear: none of those are privacy preserving.
