In the US, at least, cooperatives are the best transitional medium for probably 99% of the population - a population that has been so thoroughly propagandized its entire life that they are actually frightened by the word socialism.
Right now, co-ops are the best way we've got to begin shifting the overton window into less suicidal territory, and, in the meantime, they improve material circumstances, at least locally.
