When I have a speaking engagement come up, I go to the list and see who is knowledgeable about the topic. And I also ask folks in my network who they know that they could recommend.
Often, I'm only 1 person removed from the speaker through another connection because they're doing the work of networking around the area (or topic) they want to speak on.
