When I was looking at grad schools, a lot of people tried to tell me it didn't matter because college towns "are always more liberal".
If you're marginalized in any way, it matters.
Increasingly, it matters even if you're just going somewhere for a conference or other academic event. All the more reason not only for professional societies to think hard about where they host things, but to catch up with the 21st c. and offer creative accessible online options for all.
