i can not give precise informations, but maybe this helps a bit:
may relay was flooded by a hand full of spambots (i guess 10 or something) with nearly 1000events a hour, peaks with 600events a minute.
the webservers specs were Xeon E3-1230V6@3,5ghz
16gb Ram
SSD storage
the cpu usage was currently at 50% and also maxing out to 100% peak for several minutes. so was the memory filled up to 99% when the cpu wasn able to get the work done. disk i/o was massive too.
now i created a whitelist, where users have to give their pubkey to enable writing to the relay. similiar to payed relays but without paying.
it's really calm now but i cannot tell how the load would be with 1000 "normal behaving" users.
