So how do you treat water for pathogens after a disaster takes out water treatment?
1. Boiling — wipes out essentially all microbes. At high altitude, may need a few minutes of rolling boil.
2. Filters — have to be careful here. The majority of backpacking/prepping filters get parasites and bacteria, but miss smaller pathogens like viruses.
3. Iodine — only for clear, warm water. (Sucks).
4. Chlorine dioxide — works, but has to be warm(ish). Treatment time for cold water is many hours.
