just a spitball, but it should be possible to create a custodial wallet system which can convert the funds into a new channel once someone sets up their own lightning node.
I don't think the solution is to encourage everybody to run their own node (as much I would like that to be the case), to me it seems more important that the off-ramp exists for anyone who decides to take more responsibility over their funds
