I was living there for a few months at the time too. As I recall, there was a group that did an all-too-believable parody where they said the French Quarter was being officially renamed the Freedom Quarter. Nobody could tell if they were serious or not, and even when it was clear they weren't, everyone seemed a bit shellshocked by the idea.
