there's an idea in computing I particularly like: write-once memory — initially it's clear, can only be written once, but not erased without destruction of the entire medium — like paper and pen, or a PROM, the information doesn't get routinely lost — of course it is assumed that the medium is really cheap and abundant, just not selectively erasable
we aren't quite there yet, but then again there were times when paper and ink were expensive
