I got into it many, many years ago, and I found that it and RPGs truly fed one another in terms of conception, realization, and the ability to express complex ideas in ways that other players can immediately and viscerally understand.
All that said, cliches are not inherently bad. They are shorthand. They are an easy way to get someone onto the same page as you very quickly. But once you get them there, you need to show them more reasons to stay, as it were.
The easy cliche is the hook, but you still need a story for them to swallow, as true in an RPG as it is in the screenplay. The difference is that you don't have an audience until you're done putting together a screenplay.
But the whole process of conceiving and expressing a world and characters is a collective act at the table.
