In an age where new equipment and technology comes out every day, it’s easy to lose touch with the essentials.
This book has taught me a lot, and admittedly a lot of it I will have to reread when I gain more experience, but the biggest takeaway for me is how to rely on yourself, rather than fancy equipment, in the beautiful sport of sailing.
Investing in modern equipment seems convenient, but it comes at a cost. It’s more important to learn with less, not more, so when equipment fails or chaos strikes, you’ve built up the skills to handle the situation with ease, rather than being SOL when your in-mast furler breaks.
It seems daunting to immerse myself in some situations with a very “bare bones” sailboat because I do not trust myself completely. However, I know the confidence and skills will come with more time, and one day I will be the independent, self-sufficient, bad ass sailor I want to become.
