This isn't a perfect analogy, but as a photographer, I think of the difference between a print and looking a photo on a monitor as being much like the difference between live music and a recording.
Music recordings and online photos can be fine, and certainly can have power and impact. But with a print, as with a live performance, you're experience the artist's work directly, unmediated by uncontrolled variables and distractions.
