Well, Halloween in many pre-Christian cultures was always a time when the veil between life and death was thinnest and you could talk to the souls of the passed, especially those of the family. Witches and wizards were very helpful in this, and many were invited to homes to help communicate with the dead. Christianity deemed this heresy for a long while, and the holiday was turned into a time of fear to dissaude people from returning to the Old Ways. When the Church finally relaxed it's grip on such things, the holiday was turned into a festival similar to what we have today, and the spooky stuff was made fun.
